Have you ever started watching a show on television that pulled you in immediately, because you love the characters? It may be scripted and cast with actors or it may be a scripted reality show. But, whatever the show is you found yourself wanting to see more and get to know a bit more about those characters.
Shows like “This is Us,” “Fixer Upper,” and even shows back in the day like Dallas for instance draw a crowd to sit down in front of the set, because there’s something about Randall, or Chip, or the ever-so-famous J.R! Who could forget the summer EVERYONE was talking about “Who Shot J.R?” People were talking about it around the water cooler, and wearing T-shirts they bought with the logo that sent a wave across the nation! Do you ever wonder how we ever related to J.R?
Do you think we like the good characters as well as the bad guys? The good guys are so easy to like, but what is it about the sinister roles that draws us in? It keeps us watching…that’s for sure! Maybe there’s a crime solver in each of us. Most likely why a lot of people are drawn to the forensic shows; real or created. There’s a bit of a curiosity and shock value to some of the roles our favorite characters play. That’s why board games were created to entertain us.
We know that TV is not going away. It may not be watched in a traditional way anymore as it once was, but there are ways to watch programs now that we never could have imagined in our wildest dreams back in the 60s and 70s when television sets were limited on networking programs. So many have been created since then that it’s almost impossible to name them all or see all the shows available. Still…we manage to get locked on at least one and follow it every week as scheduled or we make sure we DVR it. With systems that allow you to purchase a wifi adaptable program to stream shows you know you can watch it any time of the day or night. We cannot miss what happens next.
Curiosity; it’s what keeps us motivated. Characters; it’s who we want to see and maybe relate to. Maybe it’s just an escape from our own realities to dive in for an hour and live in someone else’s world for a little bit. If it’s not TV it can be a book or a movie. Take something away from it for the good of it. We can enrich ourselves by learning what is good and bad and apply it in our daily lives. Just enjoy all the moments you can, and don’t forget your own characters in your own reality.
