 Craft a Sweater Hat – This is a fairly simple project that can be accomplished in a short period of time. A video link is provided at the end of this paragraph for your convenience to follow instructions. If you have an old sweater that you held onto you now have a new way to repurpose it. If you don’t have a sweater you’re willing to give up you can find one at a thrift shop. The instructions on the video tell you where to cut, so you need scissors. It also instructs you to use a need and thread or really strong fabric glue, so if you don’t have those items handy you will want to get them as well. If you have an old pin you like to wear, or buttons you’ve collected those would be fun accessories to add. Even a piece of lace combined with the buttons would be really cute. This is generically created with a pair of socks and kitty litter. Its purpose is to be placed into your car to prevent your windshields from fogging up. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? You can place it right on the dash of your car or under the seat. I could see creating more than just the generic and actually make cute animals instead with the same materials, but adding string and buttons. It could be a really fun and creative idea for many. Think about crafting many of these for friends and family as gifts.

Well it’s been an early start to some turbulent weather already and it isn’t even spring yet. Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansa anymore! The wind has been whipping up all kinds of trouble. Trees toppling over on houses, patio furniture flying around, the infamous trash cans blowing across the highway and sleepless nights because it sounds like a train coming through the house. There were even reports of tornados in Ohio…some say an early start to a tumultuous spring season.

Being prepared is all part of creating a sense of ease when it comes to this season. Make sure you have plenty of batteries for flashlights, non-flame candles and a radio (if you have a radio) and keep a supply of bottled water and some edible right from the package food. Don’t forget to take your cell phone with you if you are heading to the basement for protection. You never know when you might need to make a 911 call. I would remind those who take daily medication to take some with you when you head to the basement, you might have to be there for longer than you think. Personally, I would keep a supply of food, water and batteries in my basement and in my normal living area. If tornados are on the menu for the day, you can hibernate in the basement and if for any reason you can’t leave your basement, you’ll have supplies. If it’s just going to be your garden variety of thunderstorms, then you can stay above ground and have supplies available in the case the electric goes off. If you’re fortunate enough to have a generator, then you’ll be fine until the skies clear!

Remember to have someone take a look at the trees around your house to make sure they are not a hazard to your property when the storm clouds gather. If your trees come down, recycle the wood into a warm fire and make sure your valuable jewelry is always in a fireproof safe, a fireproof safe is usually heavy enough that the wind will not carry it away!

Chin up everyone, spring is not always about stormy weather. It’s also about beautiful flowers, planting a garden, taking walks in the sunshine, smelling the freshly mowed lawn and listening to peepers in the evening. So be prepared, enjoy the warmer weather and hang on to your hat!

We are closing in on one of the best times of the year to go hiking. Cooler weather, beautiful and colorful foliage and the sounds of fall critters and insects will melt stress and anxiety away. We all know the health benefits of hiking, but most of the concentration is on the physical aspect, but there are also the emotional aspects of sight, sound and smells. Exercise releases endorphins which makes us feel naturally happier so hiking is very good for our emotional well-being. When you add the wonderful smells and sounds to the natural endorphin release…you’ll experience an amazing transformation. Nature is so beautiful and should be enjoyed as much as possible. Grab your best pair of tennis shoes or hiking boots and your favorite 2-legged or 4-legged friend and hit the trail. Remember to keep it clean, don’t litter, and if you find litter pick it up along the way. No, you didn’t put it there, but you can certainly clean it up. Stay hydrated on your hike, drink plenty of fluids and take a break now and then…breaks are a great time to simply breath in all the great smells or to check out the wildlife scampering around.  I included a link to many hiking trails just a few miles from where you live in Ohio.

If you didn’t have the amazing opportunity to experience a drive-in movie theater or a car hop, then you really missed out on one of the best dying or dead experiences ever. Even if it was stifling weather, we truly didn’t mind because a frosty, and I do mean frosty, mug of A & W Root Beer would take care of your thirst in no time flat! The mug had ice covering the outside and the Root Beer inside would be so cold it gave you brain freeze…but you didn’t care!

There were many drive-in restaurants around and some of them had servers on roller skates! It took a lot of skill to carry the tray and roll up to the car window without spilling a drop, and do you remember that your car window had to be down just right for the tray to hook over and rest against the car. It had just enough lean to stay put and still not let the food and drinks slide off. You could enjoy a foot-long Coney dog at A & W, or an amazing chicken sandwich at the Old Towne and then top it all off with a cream de mint sundae at the next drive-in just down the street. What a treat it was to sit in your car, eat and take in the sights of the bustling town.

Watching a movie outside in your car or sitting in the back of your pick-up truck was nothing unusual back in the day. There was an odd contraption hooked to a post that was just the right height to speak into your rolled-down window, as you watched the huge, and it was huge, outdoor screen. The contraption looked a lot like an old-time microphone, but was instead a speaker that almost always matched the mouth movement on the screen. You could count on there being a wise guy in the sea of cars that would sneak people into the theater in the trunk of his car. They seldom got caught. Equally fun would be the resounding cheers from the crowd in their cars encouraging the good guy, congratulating the guy who got the girl or screaming at the top of their lungs when the monster took his captive to the top of a building and tossed her around like a rag doll.

Yep, those were the days…the good old days. If you missed it, you can still find a few drive-in theaters and even a car hop or two, close enough to you so that there is no excuse not to experience one of the best times ever.
