It’s fall and with that comes the new fall lineup on TV. What have you been waiting for? There are a few decent shows left on TV, but a very few. New this year, The Good Doctor on ABC sounds awesome and sheds some light on Autism. America’s Funniest Videos, Shark Tank and Dancing with the Stars are all back for another round as well as American Housewife. While I am not a fan of narration during a sitcom, this one seems to flow pretty well…it’s tolerable!

They’re bringing back Will & Grace…why?? Big Bang Theory and Voice are back as well as Chicago Fire and Grey’s Anatomy.

Since I am a huge fan of HGTV, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Fixer Upper, House Hunters, House Hunters International, Good Bones and Property Brothers! I think if I have to watch one more house flipping show I might just “flip and flop” all over! Can we say overkill!

The leaves are starting to turn and the weather is turning delightfully cooler, why do we love it so much?

1.     The holidays…Halloween, Thanksgiving and the ushering in of Christmas.

2.     Clothes…who doesn’t love sweatshirts and blue jeans.

3.     Sports…let the games begin!

4.     Food…pumpkin everything! Bonfires and wiener roasts.

5.     Décor…fall color is trumped only by Christmas beauty.

6.     Family time…lots of holiday time off!

7.     Hayrides, pumpkin patches and corn mazes.

8.     Trips to the orchard for a little apple picking, cider and pumpkins.

Here’s some fun history about corn mazes.

Mazes date back at least 4000 years to the time of Greek myths. In Roman times, mazes and labyrinths were found in artwork, in the design of floors in homes, public buildings and in the pavement of streets. It is believed that mazes were not considered puzzles, but were used for rituals and processions.

In the centuries that followed, mazes continued to appear in artwork and architecture such as inlays in the floors of the French cathedrals. In Scandinavia, over 600 stone labyrinths lined the shores of the Baltic Sea, with over half of them in Sweden.

Later formal gardens were developed throughout Europe and included puzzle hedges. The garden mazes were developed at the wealthiest castles and palaces to amuse kings and princes. The task was to find the center and then return to the beginning point.

The maze in the gardens at Hampton Court Palace, one of the finest examples in England, was planted by William III (1650-1702).

In the nineteenth century mazes became a popular entertainment in parks and other public places.

Since the 1970's, navigating through an intricate maze has become a popular form of recreation.

Fall is almost here, are you looking forward to pumpkin everything, wearing sweatshirts and warm sweaters or taking in a great football game followed by a roaring bonfire? Fall is a great time of year! Meal preparation changes to thoughts of warm, hearty soups, roasts with potatoes and sweet endings like a cup of hot chocolate or an evening latte. The air changes to a greener smell and leaves dance along the edges of the road and gently fall on roofs and lawns. There’s nothing better than raking up a huge mountain of leaves and jumping in with great gusto! Sitting around the fire pit on a lazy Saturday night making s’mores is a great family gathering.  I don’t know how you spend your fall days and cool fall evenings, but at McCullough’s Tree Service our thoughts turn to your lawn in the spring…that’s right I said spring.
