Are you opting for a live Christmas tree this year? Let’s take a look at both sides of the story.
A live tree is a great way to go, but why not get one that you can plant after. There are great ways to cover the root ball while it resides in your house, it stays moister and then you can add it to your landscape creating memories year after year. If you’ve decorated with popcorn and cranberries, then you can also feed the birds for a few weeks when you set the tree outside. You’ll find yourself sitting on the porch with your family reminiscing about each tree, the special or funny events of that particular year knowing that you’re creating great memories for the future. If you don’t have room in your landscape to plant your live tree, why not give it to a friend for a nice “after Christmas” gift. If you chose a live cut tree, try to find someone who will make it into mulch so that the tree will become a “green” product that serves a purpose. Remember, if you do go “live” keep it safe, water your tree and make sure it stays healthy for the duration of tree time in your house.
Now, let’s talk artificial. The best advice here is to pick one you really, really like and keep it as long as possible. Why you might ask, because when it’s disposed of, it will be in the landfill forever! Perhaps the best thing to do with your artificial tree when you decide you want another is to repurpose it. Why not pass it on to someone else or donate it to Goodwill or a thrift store. You can also look into donating it to a local retail shop, they sometimes like to have several trees throughout their stores during the holidays, but the cost of doing that can be a little overwhelming.
So now, what are you waiting for, go get that decorating done!!!
