California is home to famous beaches, famous people, famous shopping, and famous… trees? Yep! Sequoia National Park in the southern Sierra Nevada is where you will find one very special Giant Sequoia. Its’ name is General Sherman and has been standing tall for thousands of years. By volume, General Sherman is the largest living single stem tree in the world. It stands 274.9 feet tall, just 9 yards shy of being the length of a football field. At its base, the sequoia boasts a circumference of 102.6 feet. It is one massive tree. It has quite literally stood the test of time because it is believed to be anywhere between 2,300 and 2,700 years old. The astounding facts do not end there, however. General Sherman has a few friends. It is part of the Giant Forest in the park. Sitting in the Giant Forest are five of the ten most massive trees on the planet. There are 40 miles of hiking trails in the forest, so if I am ever lucky enough to take a trip out there I better grab a walking stick and my best pair of boots!
